100 Million Lives and We’re Just Getting Started

The holidays are officially here! During this time of reflection and gratitude we wanted to share some exciting news and thank you for everything you’ve done to support Acumen. Whether you’ve donated, attended an event, shared a video, or retweeted us – thank you! The holiday season reminds us that sometimes what the world needs most is something to believe in – a sense of hope and a promise of possibility for the future. And that’s what you, as a member of the Acumen community, have given us.

Thanks for Making Dignity Such a Success!

Our annual Dignity in Focus event, a photography auction and exhibition benefiting the Acumen Fund, was a huge success – thanks to everyone who came out and contributed!

Dignity in Focus

Join DC+acumen and Nuru Project for our second annual Dignity event. Acumen Fund is a non-profit venture fund that uses entrepreneurial approaches to solve the problems of global poverty. Their principle belief is that all people no matter how rich or poor seek dignity, not dependence. Acumen Fund’s DC chapter, DC+acumen, has partnered with Nuru [...]

“Ginerosity” Day at Catoctin Creek Distillery

Generosity, balanced with accountability, is one of the core values Acumen Fund, and deepening our own practice of generosity is something our team is very enthusiastic about. To date, DC+acumen has promoted the generosity of Acumen Fund’s global entrepreneurs and social enterprises on a local, community level in DC. When we discovered Catoctin Creek, a family owned producer of award winning, organic and kosher spirits with a motto to “think global…drink local”, we knew there was opportunity to partner and spread generosity with the local company.

Our mHealth Salon

In recent years, mobile health or mHealth investments have been growing in popularity globally as donors and practitioners recognize the near ubiquity of cell phones to extend the reach of public health initiatives and access to health services. As a pioneer in promoting innovative social enterprises to benefit the poor, Acumen has also invested in a number of mHealth companies such as Voxiva and Sproxil.

DC+acumen Captures the Moment

On Thursday, March 31st, the DC for Acumen Chapter hosted a special benefit, DIGNITY DC. This fundraiser was the tenth in a series of photo auctions curated by Nuru Project.

The chapter welcomed the DC community to join in for a rousing evening of art, music, cocktails, and hors d’oeuvres; all while hearing the inspiring story of Acumen Fund, and browsing and bidding on beautiful photography for auction.

An Evening Dedicated to the Value of Energy Access

On Tuesday, January 31 the DC+acumen community came together for a lively, thought-provoking discussion on the role and value of energy in our lives, and the challenges (and opportunities!) to address energy poverty.

The examples attendees gave highlighted the ever-present role of energy in our lives. Energy lights our classrooms, cooks our food, and fuels subways that bring us to work. And, in an increasingly interwoven and global world, connects us to one another.

However, for the over 1.6 billion people in the world that lack access to energy, energy poverty is very real. DC+acumen hosted the Energy Salon to better understand what this number really means and find solutions to address energy inequality.
